Print of Snow Moon over St Michael's Mount
I took this rare shot of February’s Snow Moon rising behind St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall from Newlyn harbour wall, some 4.5km (3 miles) away.
On first impression many people believe this shot is a fake and that I pasted in the Moon using Photoshop. This is definitely not the case!
In moon photography, the further you are from your subject, the bigger the moon appears next to it, so I knew I had a chance of capturing a whopper so long as the clouds held off.
Diffrerent cultures have different names for the full moon at certain times of the year. February’s full moon is known as the ‘Snow Moon’ due to the weather at this time of year.
St Michael’s Mount is a very special place.
Not only do some say that it lies on a powerful Earth energy line that runs across the country all the way from Cornwall to Norfolk, but beneath the waters around the island, and only visible at very low tides, are the remains of a 6000 year old ancient forest.
Oak, beech, hazel and pine trees are hidden beneath the sandy seabed and the original name of the Mount in Cornish, ‘Karrek Loos yn Koos’, attests to this meaning the ‘Grey Rock in the Wood’.
