Print of Moon Mining
Moon Mining is a one-of-a-kind ‘moon shot’ I took at Greenburrow mine, part of the Ding Dong mine complex in West Penwith, Cornwall, showing the April full moon rising behind the iconic pumping engine house.
This April’s moon was a ‘Super Moon’, when the moon is at its closest approach to Earth (technically called a perigee syzygy) making it look slightly bigger than usual, although the size in this photo is due to me shooting from about a kilometre away with a very powerful telephone lens.
Diffrerent cultures have different names for the full moon at certain times of the year. April’s full moon is sometimes called the ‘Pink Moon’ after a flower that blossoms in early spring with pink flowers.
April’s moon is also known as the Fish Moon, Hare Moon and in Old English, the Egg Moon. This moon is very important to religions around the world, for example in Christianity, it is used to calculate the date of Easter.
All around this area there are ancient neolithic and bronze age monuments within sight of this mine, including Men-an-Tol, Lanyon Quoit, Men Scryfa, Bosiliack Barrow and the None Maidens Stone Circle.
This whole area was clearly a very sacred landscape in times past.
