I Analysed 50 Top Landscape Photographers selling NFTs on Foundation. Here’s what I learned.

I analysed 50 Top Landscape Photographers with accounts on the NFT auction platform, Foundation, between the dates of the 5th to 9th July (2021), to answer the following question:
How much do landscape photographers earn from selling NFTs?
Specifically, I used public data to compile:
My list of 50 Top landscape Photographers selling NFTs on Foundation, ranked in order of ETH sales between the snapshot dates (5th - 9th July, 2021) to get a feeling for the range of earnings
Public details about the photographers, including Foundation account, country, short bio and social media links to provide further context and follow-up for interested parties
Stats like the max, min and average ETH sales of the 50 photographers combined
A list of the collectors who bought NFTs from them
As an aside:

I’m going to start with a summary of findings for those in a hurry and then follow up with the full list of photographers right after.

NOTES - Please read:
Everything on this page is as of writing meaning a snapshot of data between the dates of the 5th to the 9th July 2021
An average ETH/USD conversion rate of $2k was used for calculating ETH earnings in USD for easy comparisons and doesn’t account for gas or platform fees
All data used is from public sources and scraped from the photographer’s own Foundation and social media accounts
Some photographers have sold their NFTs privately to collectors, these sales cannot be accounted for in this research
Some great photographers do not list on Foundation, they are not counted here
By the time you are reading this the data will very likely have changed, so please bear that in mind
I make no guarantee that this list is in any way complete, meaning this is my “50 Top”, not “The Top 50” (whatever that would mean?)
The ranking does not infer the 1st ranked photographer is any better than the 50th, just that they have sold more NFTs by ETH value on Foundation - there are many great photographers who have minted on Foundation but not yet sold or sold very little to date for various reasons
I will endeavour to keep the data updated on a quarterly basis, the next update being w/c 1st October 2021 (unless otherwise decided)

Creators Findings
Total ETH earnings per photographer from NFTs in the list, by Foundation account, ranged from between 25.551 ETH (approx. $51.1k) to 2.370 ETH (approx. $4.7k) during the data collection period (5th - 9th July, 2021)
This graph shows the range of earnings by landscape photographers in the 50 Top List from 25.551 ETH to 2.370 ETH, with average earnings of 7.802 ETH.
The average total NFT sales per photographer on the list was 7.802 ETH (approx. $15.6k) during the period
The highest price paid for a single NFT was 8 ETH as sold by John Knopf (although John has recently smashed this! But was outside the snapshot period)
The total value of NFTs sold by all 50 photographers on the list was 390 ETH (approx. $780k) during the period
Photographers from 10 countries feature in the research with the USA having the highest representation at 60%, Spain (8%) coming second, and Canada and New Zealand joint third (on 6%).

Collectors Findings
Currently, there appear to be a limited number of landscape photography collectors, as compared to other niches like memes, collectables, or 3D art NFTs, where individual items can sell for dozens, even hundreds of ETH at a time
During my studies, I found one hyper-patron in the landscape photography niche, Vince aka @caktux, who is involved in collecting from a staggering 46 of the 50 accounts (92%) surveyed on the list
Vince aka @caktux is by far the largest collector and patron of landscape photography NFTs from my 50 Top List
Other notable collectors in the space are norcal_guy (@norcal_guy) involved in 8% of all accounts on the list
There are some other big NFT collectors like Jesse Powell (@jespow) but their involvement in collecting specifically, landscape photography NFTs, has so far been limited to a few pieces (2% of accounts on the list)
A small number of photographers are buying other photographers NFTs
For further information, collectors of each photographer are included in the list.
Conclusion
To date, most landscape photographers are quite rightly sticking to the tried and tested methods of re-packaging and re-monetizing of their existing back catalogues rather than reimagining the NFT space as a new place to create original artwork
It will be interesting to see how the new medium of NFTs influences what it means to be a ‘landscape photographer’ and how they respond to the financial incentive to create specifically for NFT-first collectors
Collecting landscape photography NFTs is dominated by very few patrons currently meaning the resale market is thin - the market could benefit from additional collectors entering the niche which would boost both initial auction valuations and add some much-needed resale liquidity
Not every ‘top’ photographer has decided to sell NFTs - some may be holding back to see how the NFT space evolves in terms of auction platforms, prices and other factors
The average account value of 7.802 ETH (approx. $15.6k) is not representative of all landscape photographers who list on Foundation, only those in my ‘50 Top’ list
There are several great photographers who have not sold an NFT on Foundation to date for likely all different reasons
Most NFT sales of those on the list have occurred recently, the majority from March 2021 onwards.

First, I’d like to thank all the photographers that made my list. Although the process of manually collating and checking the data has been tedious at times, it has also been helped enormously by having your incredible photographs to enjoy along the way!
Second, NFTs are at the cutting edge of art, finance, technology and culture, and an increasing number of photographers are able to make a meaningful income from them.
Although NFTs have little track record to date, in my opinion, I believe we are at the dawn of a new medium for art as the human race moves inevitably towards increasing digitisation.
